WAKE FOREST

I had trouble explaining our mascot to my grandmother, a devout Baptist. A Demon Deacon, I said, wears a top hat and tuxedo, carries an umbrella, and rides onto the field on a motorcycle. She asked which part was the demon. I said the motorcycle. She seemed relieved. This hand-drawn Wake Forest poster is now hanging in her guest room, beside a needlepoint Lord’s Prayer. Go Deacs.
