When I announced I was going to Tulane, my father asked if New Orleans was still in America. Technically, yes. Spiritually, it was unclear. I came home for Christmas pronouncing “praline” in a way nobody could repeat and calling the sidewalk a “banquette.” My mother assumed it was a cry for help.
